Resolution Worksheet: Tips & Support

habits Dec 28, 2016

Did you download your worksheet? If not, get it here.

Tips to Create Your Best Resolutions:

  • BE honest. Simply fill in the blanks as honestly as possible in your worksheet. You may have to start over a few times to hone your resolution. You can also use a different notebook if you need more space or want to get more artistic with your answers.
  • Set one resolution- you can add another later. I know it's tempting to set more, but multiple resolutions rarely succeed. They're often overly-ambitous and way under-planned. Your Resolution Worksheet will walk you through creation of a more realistic resolution that nourishes your body, mind, and energy. If you're interested in improving your overall wellbeing, then check out your wellBEing lab where you'll get the support and guidance to effectively cultivate more optimal wellbeing in effective and meaningful ways.
  • Make sure your resolution is specific and doable. Setting too many resolutions can leave you overwhelmed and...

Create Better Resolutions

habits Dec 28, 2016

Here's the thing:

1. Resolutions-as-usual rarely work.

Nonetheless, every January 1st invites the temptation to reinvent yourself with lots of resolutions. You write down that new rigorous exercise regimen, promise to never touch a crystal of sugar again, and build a meditation alter in your living room to support your planned daily practice.

The first three days are a breeze!

Then that happy hour on day four- with lots of margaritas. You consumed a few extras to account for the fact that you slipped up early with your sugar resolution, but won't have any more margaritas for the rest of the year. But, that next day headache meant no meditation or workout, plus your meditation alter broke. Frustration sets in. Day six was a weekend and... all the weekend things declared war on your resolutions. What was the point of all this again? You surrendered on day eight with a margarita and toasted to renewed self-care... next year.

I had many years that started out like this. Margaritas,...

108 Sun Salutations: Ritual or Repetitive Injury?

108 repetitions of the sun salutation A series (sun A) has become the go-to yogi event for seasonal transitions. Roughly 10-12 movements make up one set; equating to lots of poses in a short period of time. It’s a challenge for the body and mind (with emphasis on those shoulders and hamstrings). Essentially, 108 events are to yoga what marathons are to running: the ultimate challenge.

Why 108 sun A's? The number “108” is identified as sacred in many wisdom traditions. The justification behind the use of the Sun A series is more obscure, but often boils down to three explanations:

  1. The repetition of postures serves as a ritual.
  2. Sun A is “authentic” or “classical” asana.
  3. Sun A is a challenging aerobic exercise

Let’s unpack these explanations a bit more to see if they're legit.

Ritual: Joseph Campbell identifies ritual as the enactment of a myth that satisfies our desires for power, duty, and pleasure. Many of us are thirsty...

Nutritional "Yoga" Detoxes: Helpful, Harmful, or Waste of Time?

be your best teacher Dec 18, 2016

Resolutions are approaching and now is the prime time for detox-themed yoga classes and workshops. These events usually pair a nutritional detox with yoga classes full of "detoxifying" postures and sequences- often set in a heated room. We'll focus on the nutritional portion of these events now and dig into the postures in a later post.

[It's important to clarify that we're discussing the practice of non-medical "detoxing" for healthy adults. Medical detoxes have very different objectives and individuals with diagnosed conditions should be extra careful when engaging in non-medical detoxes.]

Effectiveness of Detoxes

Non-medical detoxing is a complex and often controversial conversation. If you want to explore these conversations more, start with this overview and follow with this in-depth review.

The Big Picture. Research on non-medical detoxes is sparse, but has shown few health benefits and some concerning side effects. Given the lack...
